The Unsolved Problem in Orthopedics and Vascular Surgery

Permanent implants are  accompanied by long-term risks and side effects:  Inflamation and implant loosening occur frequently over time. Every year 5 to 15% of medical implants in Europe and US must be removed when they are no longer needed. This requires a second intervention and causes additional pain and discomfort for the patient.

Our Solution - Biodegradable Metals

Our solution consists in  developing implants made of biocompatible, metallic elements, which support tissue healing over a controlled time-span, necessary for reconstruction and are then gradually absorbed by the human body. Using biodegradable metals in orthopedics and vascular surgery is a novel concept that breaks the established paradigm of ‘‘metallic biomaterials must be corrosion resistant’’. By this approach, healing proceeds without complications and no secondary surgeries need to be performed.

For all times, metal corrosion was considered a problem, associated with poor quality, gear failure and reduced device life.

Today, in metal corrosion lies our solution. Implants are absorbed after fullfilling their mission, making secondary surgerys obsolete.

Problems associated with second interventions:

  • they are cost-intensive

Removal costs in Europe sum up to 5 B€/year

800 M€ loss of gross productivity

  • they are technically challenging

Removal not possible up to 10%

  • they are associated with complications

General complications 12% – 40%

Upcoming innovative biabsorbable metal implant solution, they:

  • corrode gradually in vivo

with an appropriate host response

  • dissolve completely

upon fulfilling the mission to assist with tissue healing with no implant residues

  •  are composed of major essential metallic elements

that can be metabolized by the human body
